Avoiding the Personal Website
As a UX designer (someone who makes their living online) I’m almost forced to create an about-me.com website. How else can I share my work? How else can I enable future employers to trust what I do? I’ve been putting this off for some time now. I just don’t want to design another personal website. I want to write more and with time I want to write better.
Some of you will relate to this “all or nothing” personality type, also known as the A or F personality. When something is deemed interesting focus and attention are plentiful… when something is “dull” it takes outside pressure (procrastination) to accomplish the task. If this sounds finicky keep in mind this is coming from someone who has turned digging a ditch into a “core workout”.
Life is too short to build something you’re not passionate about, and to add insult to injury chances are you’ll do a piss poor job on top of it. Why have all the risk of being an entrepreneur with none of the upside (no, not lots o'cash — the satisfaction of doing something that challenges you).
So instead of a portfolio site, jam packed with filler content, share your work via a blog. Carefully writing about your work is better than any perfectly aligned thumbnail grid. Im interested in how you think, not how you try to squeeze yourself into a responsive WP theme. While not everyone needs to be a brand, everyone should have their own unique voice and perspective.
This is my first post… a man has to start somewhere. I thought it best to start with something I’m currently mulling over. Send me your thoughts and ideas.
